I worked as a nurse for 10 years but had to quit to stay home with my now 2 year old twins when they were 7 months old. My daughter had a seizure and it didn’t make sense to stay. I am glad there is a list like this. I stayed home and just spend time with my babies most of the last year and a half but recently in May started with Origami Owl as a way to have fun and spend time with other female adults. Later I joined Plexus just to get the discount myself and I have been doing amazing both in my wellness journey & making quite a bit of money off of it also. I am hoping to make it into a full time income before my kids go to kindergarten so when they go to school I don’t have to go back to work. I just don’t want to send them to daycare during the summers so unless I find a job as a school nurse I plan to stay home. Life is too short & they stay little for too short of a time to send them to daycare for someone else to raise them for me.
Thank you for such a great, practical list! I currently live overseas and my options are limited. I love the great income I make with Jamberry, I joined early and have an incredible team. Team building is key in direct sales! Since my kids are school-aged I also started substitute teaching this year and love it. Definitely looking into a few more ideas from this list. Thanks again!
I’m looking for people to join my team with Advocare! It’s a great opportunity to get healthy (especially as the New Year approaches!) and make some additional money! I make a couple hundred dollars extra each month and save on my own orders! I feel so strongly about the program I’m willing to pay people’s start up costs! Email me with “advocare” in the subject line if you’re interested!
Create a writer website or blog. A website not only demonstrates your technical ability, but it also creates an online hub that allows clients to connect to you. Keep the design of your website clean and uncluttered. Include examples of your work that demonstrate the kind of writing you do. Make the samples easy to find and to read, and make it easy for visitors to figure out how to contact you. . A blog highlights your technical ability and showcases your ability to write blog posts. Your blog can be about different topics than those you write about for your clients. In fact, it should be on a topic that interests you. Visitors will see that you can not only write, but you can also build an online community. A good blog has the potential to earn you many referrals for more clients.
They often expect you to commit to working a certain number of hours per week, which is generally part-time. They will pay you an hourly salary for that work, so it is really more of an at home job situation than it is in an entrepreneurial way to make money online. Still, if you want to get involved in political activity, and you have the time and motivation, this could be a way to monetize that passion.
If you are looking for an office job that doesn’t require you to go into an office, becoming a virtual assistant could be a great fit. Tasks will vary depending on the company but can include things like scheduling appointments, data entry, organizing records, email management, social media management and editing. Contacting bloggers, online companies and websites directly can be a great way of finding job opportunities, in addition to advertising in and responding to job boards.
Flexibility is crucial in the work from home job you choose because you also have kids that you are taking care of in the home and other home chores as well. Online jobs that allow you to set your own schedule will be a good choice so that you are able to plan your day accordingly. If possible, try and avoid jobs that have strict policies against background noise because you can never know when one of your kids will run into the room screaming while you are working.
Tutoring. My friend Jenny tapped into a high-income community and used her teaching background to earn $40/hour helping with homework. The real money came when she bundled three kids together for group homework sessions, charging each family $25/hr. That’s $75 for an hour of work that can be done while your baby naps. Or, while you pay a teenager $10 to watch the baby in another room. This is one of those work at home jobs for moms that can be both financially beneficial and persoanlly rewarding as you help children learn.
Sadly we had a few family emergencies that did not allow me to fully focus on advertising and taking care of my shop. And after having a C-section it was difficult as well. My advise to you is go for it, if you have any artistc/crafty talent than etsy is right for you. Choose your Etsy store name wisely because you can only change it once or twice, and let it represent your shop. Also be very patient, not every month is busy I have had months where nothing sells and one time I sold about $590. Also make sure you have the space to work because it does get messy. And at first you will invest on materials. And lastly be very informed about shipping prices. I began using FeDex, their customer serivice is great but pricy there were time I would ship pinatas and it would cost way more than what they paid me, so I would make like $10 or less. So I came to the conclusion that USPS was the best, its way cheaper so its easier to estimate prices and if you go over budget you only put a few dollars rather than the whole sale, but their customer service isn’t that great.
Build up a following on your Instagram account and you could quickly be making extra money online. Major brands, gear companies, and even startups are willing to shell out $500-$5,000+ per post to get in front of your audience. While it’s getting harder and harder to build a massive Instagram audience, if you already have a solid niche and are posting quality content regularly, with a few small tweaks you can make yourself an influencer. Check out this awesome article from Shopify on how to build and grow your Instagram following to get started.
Dog watching. One of the best jobs for stay at home moms who love their four-legged friends. Rover.com matches dog owners who need pet sitting with pet lovers who want to help. Create your profile and set your prices. Must be in a city populated enough to find business, but the potential to earn hundreds of dollars per month is there. (Heather in Seattle nets $500 to $1000 per month this way.)
Phone Work – These are jobs that will require you to use the phone as part of your job. Some may require a landline and/or a good quality headset while others may not. The jobs include customer service positions where you handle inbound calls; others are sales jobs, escalation support, telephone researcher positions, mystery shopping, technical support, virtual assistant and telemarketing positions.
You will come cross many work from home jobs that pay really well, but you have to ask if you will enjoy doing them for a prolonged time period. If the answer is in the negative, then you should consider seeking out a job that will not be too demanding and the pay is reasonable. The home based job that you settle for should match your personality so that you do not feel overwhelmed after a while. This work at home directory is a great starting point!
In addition to blogging, I write ebooks which is by far where most of my online income comes from. I also pick up a friend’s sons from school each day and they hang out with us until she gets off of work. It’s a blessing to both our families. My ebook, Hope – Thriving While Unemployed, has quite a few self employment ideas. – Angi Schneider at Schneider Peeps
Wow this is a well-done list! And I see all the time you put into it has paid off considering it has been shared over 50,000 times! Congrats to you! I personally like the virtual assistant idea. I have not done it, but I love the idea of it and I think it can be a great way for decent income if you find the right company. Just takes some time and effort to apply to some places if you want to make significant income. I was doing research on VA jobs and it looked like there are multiple companies available to get with. It kind of looked like the higher paying companies wanted a bit of experience though. Anyway, great article thanks!
Wow thank you so much for this article, I am a single father with 3 under 4 and I’ve been trying to find something for months along the lines of what you have posted here I truly understand the hardship single mothers in general face because I myself am going through that hardship right now. I think you may have just helped better mine and my children’s lives with this and I am eternally greatful.
I freelance a bit, along with doing some VA (virtual assistant) work for other bloggers. I also earn a bit with sponsored posts, affiliate sales, and advertising on my blog. I have also self-published a book, Intentional Marriage, and create printables which I sell in my shop. – Crystal at Serving Joyfully (Shannon here! Crystal is one of several VAs that I work with to help me with the blog. She is an absolute wiz with graphics and is responsible for many of the pretty images you see here on Affording Motherhood.)
Transcription jobs are ideal for stay at home moms who have excellent listening skills and a good command of the English language. Basically you listen to an audio tape and type out what you hear in plain texts. Most companies and clients require that you have previous experience if you want to do medical and legal transcription jobs. These companies will hire you to do general transcription without any prior experience. It takes a lot of patience and concentration to do transcription jobs. If you have the required skills, you can find plenty of jobs to earn a decent amount of income every month.
Find your niche partners, collaborators, and champions: As you’re creating your course, look for notable people who are also creating content in the space. Look at how their businesses operate and incorporate that into your own plan. You can also reach out to any influencers and make them affiliates for your own course. This way, they’ll be incentivized to share your content with their own audiences (which can be a major way to generate your first sales and start building your own community!)

I love this post! I meant to comment on your Facebook post about this and in true new mom fashion, I forgot to come back and do it. So here’s my little story…it has provided WAY more than I initially thought and has continued to provide. I’m a SAHM to a toddler and newborn. I used to teach and my husband teaches as well. After cutting expenses in our own budget, the next best way for us to save more money was to make money. I decided to open an Etsy shop (Joyful Art Designs) and sell printable signs. I spent 6 months preparing to open and a lot of hours the first several months to make it successful. The hard work has paid off and I’ve now replaced my teaching income if I had our two kids in day care. Right now I put in about 1-3 hours a day if I can since we have a newborn. I love blogging, but it’s a hobby, whereas this is a business. Thanks for letting us share our businesses…this is great for those searching to make money.
Something else I recommend is taking the free 7-lesson mini-course on general transcription offered by Janet Shaughnessy of Transcribe Anywhere. This will help you to understand if you're a good fit for a transcription career, what you can potentially earn, and also where to get started. Janet also has free legal transcription mini-course if you're more interested in going that route.
